Hizb Allah planned to avenge Mugniyeh, use Egypt as stage

Scene from an attack in EgyptFollowing non-stop clashes between Hizb Allah and Egypt, Asharq al-Awsat released additional details from interrogated Hizb Allah suspect Sami Shehab, who stated that his cell monitored Israeli vessels going through the Suez Canal, as well as monitored tourism sites frequently visited by the Israelis, such as Dahab and Sharm al-Sheikh:

The London-based daily reported that Shihab said his cell surveilled tourist sites in Taba, Dahab and Sharm el-Sheikh and tracked Israeli ships passing through the Suez Canal.

Egyptian officials announced last week that a cell of 49 men with links to Hezbollah were arrested on suspicion of planning attacks aimed at destabilizing the country.

Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, rejected the accusations but confirmed over the weekend that it had dispatched an operative to Egypt – a rare acknowledgment that the Lebanese militant group was operating in another Arab country.

Nasrallah said Shehab was arrested Nov. 19 along with other Egyptian and Palestinian citizens on charges of smuggling arms and equipment to Gaza through the Egyptian border.

Egypt’s attorney general on Sunday added espionage to the charges against 49 alleged Hezbollah agents.

Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud told Egypt’s state run news agency MENA late Sunday that the alleged agents, including Lebanese, Palestinian, Egyptian and Sudanese nationals, have been spying for a foreign group intending to carry out terrorist attacks in Egypt.

It seems that the attack planned by Hizb Allah cell was supposed to be a grand one. In it, many Israelis – as well as Egyptians and foreign tourists – would perish. It seems that although Egypt arrested the men out of its own interests, we should thank it for the arrest and for saving lives of possibly hundreds.
