UN’S TEAM, CALLED up by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, calls for Israel to cooperate with it, during team’s investigation into alleged war crimes Israel committed during its Gaza operation this winter.

Team’s chief – Richard Goldstone – declared team’s investigation would be “law-based”.

"In the course of its work, the mission intends to conduct visits to affected areas of southern Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza, and has requested the cooperation of the government of Israel in this regard," the team said a statement issued by the UN in Geneva on Friday.

"I believe that an objective assessment of the issues is in the interests of all parties, will promote a culture of accountability and could serve to promote greater peace and security in the region," the South African judge said.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has called for an investigation into whether the IDF committed war crimes in the coastal strip of 1.5 million people.

She raised specific concerns about the Israeli shelling of a home that killed 30 Palestinian civilians and a lack of care for young, starving children whose mothers died in the attack.

To be honest, I can easily believe the investigation will be “law-based” – after all, every single critic of Israel’s ‘Cast Lead’ cited international law. This nitpicking obviously bears fruit – but for only one reason: it is impossible to wage a war strictly according to international law. No country fully abides by it, and among the offenders are Russia, US, UK, France, Iraq, Iran, Palestinians and many others. For reasons UN keeps quiet about, those countries are under no investigation for war crimes, including Hamas’ violations of its own people’s rights. I guess only Israel can be blamed for killing – facts of Hamas’ murder of Fatah members just because they are member of rival gang usually never surface.
